New Display: Film Adaptations of Books

The Quest library has a large collection of movies that are based on books that you may have read as a child, or as an adult! Books such as Holes, Harry Potter, and Ender’s Game. I wanted to explore the fictional worlds that we as readers first dreamed about then saw others bring to life or, if you watched them first, to see the written words that inspired the movies.

Movies based on fiction are very interesting to look at because they show how different individuals will interpret stories in different ways. The creators of a movie will choose to include or leave out certain events and people — this changes the way the story is experienced and can also change how well a movie is received. In the selection of books and movies in this display there are some adaptations which are well loved, and others which are not as loved. All of the Harry Potter films are well loved and are examples of when the audience loves them just as much as the books, not the case for all of the fans, but there is never a unanimous happiness. The movie of the book Ender’s Game was not as well received by fans; it changes key elements of the story and loses much of the rich intimacy the reader gains from the words written in the original book.

This display is to encourage you, the reader and the watcher, to experience both, and to see how the two ways of experiencing the story changes the way you understand and interact with it. Quest teaches students to critically engage with material — how can you critically engage with the relationship between a book and a movie? Enjoy immersing yourself in a world of imagined stories and rich characters and let them inspire the way you carry out your work or creative projects.
